About Artevino by Maple Creek Winery

Artevino by Maple Creek Winery is the marriage of two crafts by Tom Rodrigues, the artist whose labels have graced Far Niente, Nickel and Nickel and Dolce, and a third-generation fruit farmer whose family story begins in Portugal's Azores. A motorcycle ride out of the Bay Area in 2001 brought him to Maple Creek Ranch in the Yorkville Highlands, and he never really left, buying the winery and devoting the decades since to small-batch, artisanal wines wearing his own artwork.

The estate vineyards grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and two rarities, Flora and Symphony, a Muscat-Grenache Gris cross almost never seen in tasting rooms, thriving in the hot days, cool nights and rocky hillside soils of the Yorkville Highlands. Mendocino Zinfandel and Cabernet from long-standing grower relationships round out the list, farmed sustainably without pesticides or herbicides, with production small enough that many wines see fewer than 200 cases.

The rustic tasting room, hung with Tom's paintings and tucked among oaks off Highway 128, lives by the sign on its door: Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends. It is dog friendly and picnic perfect, Tom or his wife Teresa are often the ones pouring, and the ranch around it, complete with pigs, goats and chickens, keeps the whole experience unmistakably personal.
