About Balsall Creek
Jon and Lesli Owens founded Balsall Creek, and their family has been in Oregon since 1850, which makes them eight generations deep in the state. The winery itself is new: the Estate House on Calkins Lane opened to the public in April 2024.
The estate runs to thirty-five acres just north of the Dundee Hills in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, with twenty of those planted. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the focus, but the planting is deliberately wider than that: Gamay Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Aligote and Pinot Meunier all grow here too. Aligote in particular is grown by almost nobody else in the valley.
The farming is the part worth reading twice. The vineyard is dry-farmed and hand-harvested, certified both LIVE and Salmon Safe, and the property runs on solar with the stated intention of generating more energy than it uses.
The Estate House sits above the vines with views across neighbouring vineyards to the Chehalem Mountains and the Dundee Hills. It was built with a full commercial kitchen, which opens up dinners hosted by the owners, guest chef evenings and catered events alongside the tastings. Flights come as red, white or mixed, each covering at least four estate varietals, and a longer vineyard tour walks all six before a private tasting.
