About Barking Dog
Barking Dog was planted by retired United States Navy veterans, and the name is not decorative: the vineyard is home to a pack of rescued Golden Retrievers, one of which is on the label.
The vineyard and the tasting room are in different places. The fifteen acres sit southeast of Bald Peak State Park in the foothills of the Chehalem Mountains AVA, on steep south-facing slopes running from roughly 760 to 1,100 feet, in decomposed basalt over marine sedimentary soils. Five Pinot Noir clones are planted there, including the older Coury and Wadenswil selections alongside Dijon 667 and 777 and Mount Eden. The views take in the valley, the Red Hills of Dundee and Ribbon Ridge.
The tasting room is in downtown Carlton, and doubles as an art gallery with rotating exhibits from emerging and established artists. Jim Sanders makes the wine, and the range is small-batch and single-vineyard: Pinot Noir, a rose of Pinot Noir and a white Pinot Noir.
Giving back is built into the structure rather than bolted on. Ten per cent of bottle sales go to partner charities, and proceeds from the art sales support Gallery 110, a nonprofit working with minority artists. The vineyard also runs biodiversity work including a Bee Pollinator Pathway.
