About Battle Creek Cellars

Battle Creek has been making terroir-driven Oregon Pinot Noir since 1998, taking its name from the Battle Creek Vineyard, though the range now draws on a spread of sites across the state rather than a single estate. The winery is part of the Browne Family group, and the Willamette Valley Wineries Association lists it as Battle Creek by Browne Family.

Sarah Cabot makes the wine. The stated approach is artisan without ceremony, and the range runs to Pinot Noir above all, with Chardonnay and rose also poured.

The tasting room is on NW 13th Avenue in the Pearl District, and it behaves more like a neighbourhood wine bar than a cellar door. There are French bistro-style bites, charcuterie and cheese alongside the flights, glasses and bottles, and a calendar that takes in live jazz, trivia, book clubs and Portland's First Thursday art walk.

That makes it a different proposition from most of this list. There is no vineyard to look at, but there is a room open into the evening, six or seven days a week, reachable on foot or by transit, in a part of town with somewhere to go afterwards.

A wine bar that happens to be a winery, open into the evening in the middle of Portland.
