Big Basin Vineyards is named for Big Basin Redwoods State Park — California's oldest state park, established in 1902 to preserve the ancient coast redwood forest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Big Basin naming declares the estate's relationship to the ancient forest that surrounds and contextualizes the vineyard: wine made in the shadow of ancient redwoods, on soils shaped by millennia of forest decomposition, in an ecosystem where the trees are centuries older than any cultivated vine.
