About Big White House Winery
Big White House Winery and John Evan Cellars were two labels under one roof in Livermore, California, in the Livermore Valley east of the Bay. The operation grew out of backyard winemaking started by John Marion and friends in the 1980s and went commercial in 1998. His son John Evan Marion made his first wine that year and eventually ran the place, with Jessica Carroll as assistant winemaker and John Evan's sister Laura Marion painting the bottle labels.
Big White House carried the exploratory side, reaching to unusual varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Teroldego and Peloursin alongside Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling, while John Evan Cellars was the premium reserve tier, launched when John Evan turned 21. The tasting room occupied an 1897 Colonial house hung with dozens of Laura Marion's paintings, and tastings were often led by the winemakers themselves.
The winery is permanently closed, and its own site now carries that notice. The old weekend tasting and pickup hours of 11:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday no longer apply, and there is no reservation to make or fee to pay. The contact line was (925) 449-1976.
