About Broadley Vineyards
Craig and Claudia Broadley left California for Oregon on the back-to-the-land impulse of the 1970s, and founded Broadley Vineyards in 1981 on a shoestring. They planted their first estate vines that year on a northeast-facing slope in the hills west of Monroe, in the southern Willamette Valley, and released an inaugural vintage in 1986 while holding down other jobs to pay for it. Their son Morgan was eleven when the planting began and helped put the vines in the ground.
Morgan is now the winemaker and vineyard manager and his wife Jessica runs most of the rest, which makes this one of the valley's established second-generation family estates. The 33-acre vineyard sits a few miles from the winery on steep clay ground, dry-farmed and hand-harvested, planted to Pommard, Wadenswil and Dijon Pinot Noir clones with Gamay Noir and Chardonnay added later.
The site is unusual for the Willamette. Sheltered by the Coast Range, it lies in what locals call the banana belt, among the warmest and driest pockets of the valley, so fruit, seeds and stems tend to ripen fully rather than marginally. That gives Morgan the option of whole-cluster fermentation in most vintages. Farming is deliberately low-input: no herbicides, organic matter to feed the vines, and sheep put to work on the cover crop.
Certain blocks are bottled under their own names - Claudia's Choice, Marcile Lorraine and Jessica - and the 1994 Claudia's Choice is the wine that made the reputation, taking 97 points from Wine Spectator and standing for decades as the highest-scoring Oregon Pinot Noir on record. The winery itself sits on Highway 99W beside the Long Tom River, roughly halfway between Corvallis and Eugene, with a tasting room overlooking the water and a seasonal riverside patio.
