About Brooks Note Winery
Brooks Note Winery is the small, family label of Garry and Joanne Note Brooks, whose combined surnames give the winery its name. Garry left a career in IT business management in 2004 to chase winemaking, studying viticulture at UC Davis at night and working cellars at Ravenswood, Kosta Browne and Dutton-Goldfield before releasing his first Pinot Noir in 2012. The style he settled on is deliberately restrained, with grapes picked a touch less ripe, aiming for balance between fruit and savory, herbal character rather than sheer power.
Pinot Noir is the heart of the portfolio, drawn from cool-climate sites across Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino counties, alongside Chardonnay, a few Italian and Rhone-leaning bottlings and a rose of Pinot. The wines have earned strong marks from critics for their elegance.
The tasting room sits in downtown Petaluma inside a renovated 1921 Studebaker dealership, an airy, modern-industrial, solar-powered space that also houses the working winery. Visits are seated and unhurried, built around a flight of Pinots paired with local cheese and charcuterie; reservations are appreciated, though the welcome is famously easygoing.
