About Buscador Winery
Buscador means Searcher, and the name is the whole philosophy: owner-winemaker Matt Kowalczyk spent more than a decade searching out the Santa Ynez Valley's best vineyards and working alongside its best winemakers before opening his own winery and tasting room on Buellton's Industrial Way on April 1, 2017. His wife and co-owner Stephanie brings her own cellar chops, from planting a Sta. Rita Hills vineyard to working harvests in Marlborough, New Zealand.
The wines are small-lot and hands-on, roughly 500 cases a year spanning bold Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, silky Rhones from Syrah to Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, and occasional Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from Santa Barbara County fruit.
The experience is the draw: winery and tasting room share one industrial warehouse, so you sip beside the very barrels the next vintages are aging in, often with Matt himself pouring, telling the stories and occasionally pulling a barrel sample. Open Friday through Monday afternoons, with no reservations needed for six or fewer, and the tasting fee waived with a purchase.
