About Caparone Winery

Caparone is a glorious throwback, one of Paso Robles' oldest small wineries and a refreshing antidote to the region's fancier estates. Founded in 1979 by Dave Caparone and now run with his son Marc, it is an American pioneer of Italian grape varieties: the first in the country to commercially produce Sangiovese and Aglianico, and among the first to grow Nebbiolo. The wines are all single-varietal, unfined and unfiltered, made in an old-world, minimalist style that is age-worthy, food-friendly, and famously well-priced.

There is no charcuterie, no live music, no fire pits. The tasting room is the working winery itself, a metal warehouse with a board laid across barrels for a bar, and the person pouring is usually Dave or Marc, ready to talk you through decades of Paso history. For anyone who cares more about what is in the glass than the scenery, it is one of the most rewarding stops in town.

Caparone Winery isCaparone Winery is one of California's earliest estates to pioneer Italian varieties, and it is committed specifically to Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Aglianico in Paso Robles.
✓
Dave Caparone, Dave Caparone established his San Marcos Road Paso Robles estate in 1980 on the personal conviction that Italian varieties, specifically Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Aglianico, three of the most prestigious and distinctive Italian red varieties, could produce world-class wine from Paso Robles calcareous terrain. The result is one of California's pioneering Italian variety appointments, still run warmly by the Caparone family.
✓
The Caparone ItalianThe Caparone Italian variety program covers Nebbiolo (the grape of Piedmont and Barolo, rarely planted in California), Sangiovese (Tuscany's most prestigious and most widely recognized variety), and Aglianico (a tannic, age-worthy red from Southern Italy). It shows what a family-run estate that pioneered Italian varieties in California produces when genuine varietal obsession and 40+ years of accumulated Paso Robles farming knowledge guide every decision.
"Dave Caparone's 1980 Paso Robles Italian-heritage-variety-pioneering estate, one of California's earliest and most."
