About Caparone Winery

Caparone is a glorious throwback, one of Paso Robles' oldest small wineries and a refreshing antidote to the region's fancier estates. Founded in 1979 by Dave Caparone and now run with his son Marc, it is an American pioneer of Italian grape varieties: the first in the country to commercially produce Sangiovese and Aglianico, and among the first to grow Nebbiolo. The wines are all single-varietal, unfined and unfiltered, made in an old-world, minimalist style that is age-worthy, food-friendly, and famously well-priced.

There is no charcuterie, no live music, no fire pits. The tasting room is the working winery itself, a metal warehouse with a board laid across barrels for a bar, and the person pouring is usually Dave or Marc, ready to talk you through decades of Paso history. For anyone who cares more about what is in the glass than the scenery, it is one of the most rewarding stops in town.

Caparone Winery isCaparone Winery is one of California's earliest and most personally Italian-variety-California-pioneering and Paso-Robles-Nebbiolo-Sangiovese-Aglianico-specifically-committed estates.
Dave Caparone, Dave Caparone, who established his San Marcos Road Paso Robles estate in 1980 with the personal conviction that Italian varieties (specifically Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Aglianico, the three most prestigious and most individually distinctive Italian red varieties) could produce world-class wine from Paso Robles calcareous terrain, pioneered one of California's most genuinely Italian-variety-specifically and most personally Caparone-family-warmly-conducted Italian-variety-pioneering wine appointments.
The Caparone ItalianThe Caparone Italian variety program, Nebbiolo (the most personally Piedmont-Barolo-philosophically and most individually California-rarely-planted Italian red variety), Sangiovese (Tuscany's most prestigious and most globally-recognized Italian variety), and Aglianico (Southern Italy's most personally tannic-structured and most individually age-worthy Italian variety), demonstrates what the most personally Italian-variety-California-pioneering and most individually Caparone-family-warmly-conducted estate produces when genuine Italian varietal obsession and 40+ years of accumulated Paso Robles Italian-variety farming knowledge guide every decision.
