About Coleman Vineyard
Coleman Vineyard is a small family estate on a hilltop southwest of McMinnville, planted in 1991 and run by co-vintners Randy and Kim Coleman, who moved north from Southern California. The scale is modest and deliberately so: roughly fourteen acres of Pinot Noir and nine of Pinot Gris, farmed and made by the family.
The site's character comes largely from where it sits. The vineyard lies beside the Van Duzer corridor, the gap in the Coast Range that opens toward the ocean, so warm summer days are cut by crisp afternoon winds that drop evening temperatures sharply. That swing, over rich volcanic soils, is what the Colemans credit for the brightness, colour and structure in the wines, and it is part of why the area was recognised as the McMinnville AVA.
The blocks are worked individually. Deer Run, the south-facing section crowning the hill, is planted to Pommard and takes its name from Randy's encounters with the valley's more opportunistic wildlife; higher blocks carry Dijon clones 114, 115, 667, 777 and 828, and a single-clone Deer Run Dijon 115 is bottled on its own. The Pinot Gris sits on gentle west-facing slopes that catch the coastal wind and extend hang time into autumn.
Visiting is unpretentious. The tasting room shares space with the winery, barrels stacked around the room, and the family and a small staff pour for guests themselves, often with a barrel sample to hand. Alongside the estate Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris there are small bottlings of Chardonnay, Syrah and blends from favoured vineyards elsewhere.
