About Costa de Oro Winery
Costa de Oro grew straight out of Santa Maria farm soil. Gold Coast Farms, founded in 1978 by Ron Burk and Bob Espinola, planted the 30-acre Gold Coast Vineyard on a bluff at Fuglar's Point in 1989, twenty acres of Pinot Noir and ten of Chardonnay whose fruit soon poured into wines from Au Bon Climat, Foxen, Lane Tanner and the Hitching Post.
Ron's son Gary Burk, a musician by first love, joined Jim Clendenen's crew at Au Bon Climat and Qupe in 1994 and made the first Costa de Oro wines there that same year, one barrel each of Pinot and Chardonnay. He went full-time on the family label in 2002, and his estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay still aim for the old-world balance, texture and elegance he learned in that cellar.
The tasting room opened in 2006 at the old Gold Coast Farms strawberry stand just off Highway 101, and it remains one of the Central Coast's most relaxed stops: no reservations needed, live music on weekends, and Gary and his wife Teresa occasionally jumping onstage themselves. The motto is simple: when you're here, you're family.
