About Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden
Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden in the Applegate Valley is one of Oregon's most committed biodynamic producers — certified Demeter, which holds farms to the most rigorous standards of the biodynamic philosophy developed by Rudolf Steiner. Bill and Barbara Steele established the estate in 2005 with a focus on Rhône varieties ideally suited to Southern Oregon's warmer, drier climate.
The Applegate Valley AVA, a tributary valley of the Rogue River in Jackson County, receives significantly more sunshine and warmth than the Willamette Valley — conditions that allow Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne to ripen fully and develop the complexity these varieties achieve in their native Southern Rhône and Northern Rhône homes.
The wines are produced in tiny quantities, sold primarily through the winery's mailing list and the tasting room at the historic Jacksonville estate. The Syrah, in particular, has drawn comparison to great Northern Rhône examples — a striking achievement from a valley little known outside Southern Oregon wine circles.
