Dane Cellars is named for the Danes — the people of Denmark, or in the older historical sense the Norse warriors who raided the British coast and eventually settled large parts of England (the Danelaw) in the 9th and 10th centuries. The name carries the Norse directness and the cold-wind character of the North Sea: wine made with the uncomplicated conviction of people who said exactly what they meant.
The Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay program sources from fog-corridor maritime vineyard sites where the Pacific's daily cold influence creates wines of the bracing freshness and structural tension that the Norse naming implies. The cold-wind character of great Russian River Pinot Noir is the Dane character applied to wine.
