About Dane Cellars
Dane Cellars is the personal label of Bart Hansen, a self-described cellar rat with nearly four decades of Sonoma Valley harvests behind him. A Petaluma native, Hansen landed his first wine job at Kenwood Vineyards in 1986 and rose to cellarmaster over twelve years, then spent a decade at Benziger Family Winery, where he embraced biodynamic and organic farming and made wines for the Tribute and Imagery labels, before later work at Lasseter. He founded Dane Cellars in 2007 and keeps production tiny, around 750 cases a year.
The wines reflect his tastes and training: Rhone varieties are his favorite, alongside old-vine Zinfandel, Cabernet, Chenin Blanc and Bordeaux- and Rhone-inspired blends, all hand-crafted in small lots.
What makes a visit memorable is the setting. In 2024 Hansen opened his first tasting room inside a 120-year-old, 14,000-gallon redwood wine tank in Glen Ellen's Jack London Village, salvaged from Joshua Chauvet's 1887 winery. Tastings are by reservation and can be taken inside the tank itself, on the patio, or in the winemaker's office, with Bart on hand to pour and tell the valley's story. It is one of the most unusual tasting rooms in California.
