Daniel planted Appalachia's high plateau: Dr. Daniel's Crab Orchard estate grew into one of the region's largest cold-hardy plantings at 2,500 feet, dozens of varieties trialed on southern West Virginia's flat-top ground, physician-turned-grower ambition making the Twin Oaks farm the state's viticultural laboratory.
