About Division Winemaking Company
Division has been making wine in inner southeast Portland since 2012, which makes it one of the longer-running of the city's urban wineries. There is no vineyard attached; fruit comes in from responsibly farmed sites across Oregon and Washington, and the work happens in a warehouse space on SE 8th Avenue.
Kate Norris is co-owner and co-winemaker. She learned the trade in Beaujolais, Burgundy and the Loire before moving west, and the French influence shows in what Division chooses to plant its flag on. Born in Bahrain to an English father and a Malagasy mother, she has lived in England, Switzerland, France and the United States.
The variety list is the widest you will find on this list of Willamette producers: Gamay above all, then Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Syrah, Sangiovese, Cot, Nebbiolo, Trousseau, Chardonnay and Chenin. There is a carbonic-macerated Beton, a rose of Gamay and an Oregon Nouveau released each autumn, which the winery marks with a Nouveau Nouveau Fete.
Winemaking is deliberately low-intervention and the pricing is unusually sane. Visits are not casual: tastings run by appointment with the winemakers, Monday to Saturday, and the winery has stated it does not take walk-ins.
