About Donatoni Winery
Donatoni Winery is a two person operation on Township Road on the west side of Paso Robles, in the Willow Creek District north of Highway 46 West. Hank Donatoni made his first wine at home in Topanga Canyon in 1968, after buying a winemaking book on a trip to New York, and the Wine History Project of San Luis Obispo County dates the winery itself to 1979. He spent his working life as an airline pilot based at Los Angeles International and met his partner Sandi Baird on a flight where he was flying and she was working the cabin; the airline theme runs through the tasting room.
The current Paso Robles winery building went up in 2003. The couple make roughly eight hundred cases a year and handle the work themselves, so a visit is hosted by the owners rather than staffed at a bar. Cabernet and Zinfandel lead the list, alongside a number of blends, with estate plantings of Zinfandel, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah supplemented by fruit from local growers. Note that this page files the winery under a Sonoma badge; it is in Paso Robles, on the Central Coast.
