About Dovecote Estate Winery
Dovecote Estate Winery sits at the heart of the Alisos Canyon AVA on land the Thompson family purchased in 1983, nearly 800 acres of coastal ranch three miles southeast of Los Alamos where cattle and horses preceded the vines. The vineyard, planted starting in 1990 on its own roots in sandy-limestone soils, produces small lots of intensely concentrated cool-climate Rhone fruit, and the same family has farmed it across three generations while calling the estate home.
Owner Noah Thompson personally handles farming, viticulture and winemaking, a self-taught vigneron whose estate lineup spans Grenache, Syrah and Petite Sirah, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay and rose, all grown, made and sold exclusively at the property.
Visits are by appointment daily at The Shack on Mission Pond, an intimate lakeside tasting spot beside the vines where hosts pour seasonal flights over 60 to 90 unhurried minutes, with a deeper reserve flight, led by the winemaking team and including a decade-old library wine, for those who want the full story. Children and dogs are welcome, and the setting doubles as one of the area's prettiest picnic backdrops.
