About En Garde Winery
En Garde is a small, family-run winery with an intimate tasting lounge in Kenwood, in the heart of Sonoma Valley. It is the work of Csaba Szakal, a fourth-generation winemaker from Hungary who has built a devoted following for two things: powerful, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa's high-elevation mountain sites, and elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noir from top Sonoma vineyards.
The setting is deliberately unpretentious, an unassuming roadside spot rather than a grand estate, but the tastings are personal and generous, and the owner-winemaker himself is often on hand and happy to talk through his wines. Small-production, highly rated, and open a little later than many neighbors, it makes a rewarding, low-key stop or a last pour of the day.
