About Evening Land Vineyards
Evening Land Vineyards is built around a single piece of ground: the Seven Springs Vineyard, on an east-facing slope of the Eola-Amity Hills about twelve miles north of Salem. Oregon wine pioneer Al MacDonald planted it in 1984 on iron-rich, rocky volcanic soil backed by a stand of Douglas fir, with views east toward Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson, and for decades the MacDonald family sold its fruit to many of the best names in Oregon winemaking.
The winery took its name from a garden in Greek myth, an orchard at the western rim of the world where the fruits of immortality grow. It was founded in 2005, when the vineyard was leased in its entirety and effectively became a monopole, with the Burgundian vigneron Dominique Lafon leading the early winemaking team. Since 2014 it has been run by sommelier-turned-winemaker Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman, the partnership behind Domaine de la Cote and Sandhi in California, and in 2021 they began buying the vineyard outright from the founding family.
The site does unusual work. Its eastern exposure catches the morning sun, while its position facing the windy Van Duzer Corridor pulls in ocean air that cuts the heat of Willamette afternoons and slows ripening. Seven Springs has been dry-farmed since it was planted, is sustainably farmed, and was converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2007.
The wines are entirely estate-grown, and Parr and Moorman have gradually shifted more of the plantings to Chardonnay, judging the site especially well suited to it. Alongside the Seven Springs Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sits La Source, from Dijon clones in shallow rocky soil at the windy summit of the vineyard, and a Blanc de Noirs sparkling. Visits are by reservation, and since 2024 the estate has offered a longer sommelier-led tasting out in the vineyard itself.
