About Fairsing Vineyard
Mike and Mary Ann McNally were born a few blocks apart in Omaha and knew of each other in high school, but only started dating in a freshman psychology class at Creighton. After twenty-two years in Texas, Mike found himself out of work and Mary Ann told him she wanted to move to Oregon and plant grapes. He agreed. She preferred Pinot Noir and he preferred Cabernet; by their own account, she converted him.
They bought roughly 200 acres of harvested forestland high in the Yamhill-Carlton hills in the summer of 2005 and planted eighteen acres in October 2006 with the help of neighbouring growers, becoming Oregonians the following year. Planting continued at about five acres annually, and the estate now carries some thirty-eight acres of Pinot Noir and five of Chardonnay across a 190-acre site of ancient marine sedimentary soil.
The forest is as much the project as the vineyard. The vines sit within about a hundred acres of woodland, and seventy acres have been replanted with eighteen thousand conifers, three thousand deciduous trees and more than six thousand native shrubs. Fairsing is LIVE and Salmon Safe certified, belongs to the American Tree Farm System and the Willamette Valley Oak Accord, and took a LIVE Award for Excellence in Sustainability in 2025.
The wines are made by Robert Brittan, an Oregon native and UC Davis graduate who spent years as winemaker at Far Niente and Stags' Leap in Napa before returning north. Production is around three thousand cases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, rose and sparkling, including the Matriarch series named for the family's mothers and grandmothers. The hilltop tasting room takes in 360-degree views from the Cascades to the Coast Range, with covered patios, fireplaces, gardens and a seven-circuit labyrinth to walk.
