Fritz Underground Winery

Fritz Underground Winery is the most architecturally distinctive estate in the Dry Creek Valley — and the only underground cave winery in the entire AVA. Arthur Fritz commissioned the 55-foot-deep limestone cave that runs beneath the Dutcher Creek Road property in 1979 specifically to provide natural, energy-free temperature and humidity control for barrel aging — the cave maintains a constant 58°F and 80% humidity without mechanical assistance, creating the ideal environment for slow, gentle maturation of estate wines.

The cave system is the winery's signature experience: guided cave walks take visitors through the production facility that operates almost entirely underground, explaining how the natural limestone environment shapes the wines' development over the 18–24 months that Fritz barrels typically spend in the cave. Above ground, the Dutcher Creek Road estate features 65 acres of certified sustainable vineyards producing Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Dry Creek Valley benchland and hillside terrain.

The combination of underground wine education, sustainable estate farming, and genuinely excellent wines makes Fritz one of the most complete and educationally rewarding winery experiences in the northern Dry Creek Valley.
