About Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards

The Ferrer family's American dream took two generations: Pedro Ferrer, whose Freixenet cava house released its first bottles in 1914, sailed to the United States in the 1930s to open a winery, only to be turned back by the Depression and then killed in the Spanish Civil War, leaving his widow to run the family firm. His son José finally fulfilled the dream, buying Carneros cattle-ranch land in 1982 after concluding California's Mediterranean climate was the place, importing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones directly from Champagne, and, in a pointed break from the era's convention of naming wineries for the man of the house, naming the estate for his wife and partner Gloria.

The Catalan farmhouse-style winery opened in 1986 as the first sparkling wine house in Carneros, with the region's first caves dug beneath it and the president of Catalonia's government cutting the ribbon. Today the estate farms over 300 hand-harvested acres across its Home and Circle Bar ranches, produces some 150,000 cases led by the Royal Cuvée (a tribute to Spain's king) and the long-aged Carneros Cuvée, and has collected more than 500 gold medals, all still poured on the Vista Terrace with its sweeping look across Carneros toward the bay.

In 2026, Gloria Ferrer celebrates 40 years as the first sparkling wine estate in the Los Carneros AVA, founded by Jose Ferrer as a tribute to his wife Gloria. The milestone follows the recent move to organic farming across its estate vineyards and brings a 40th Anniversary Weekend of tastings, seminars, tours, and live entertainment from July 31 to August 2, plus two winery-exclusive releases debuting in August: a limited-edition Chardonnay-forward anniversary cuvee inspired by the original Royal Cuvee ($110) and the return of the RIEDEL-crafted Gloria's Glass.

Named for her, not him, bucking the era's convention of naming estates for the man of the house, José named the winery for his wife and partner Gloria.
Carneros's first bubbles, the 1986 opening made Gloria Ferrer the region's first sparkling wine house, with the first caves dug in the area.
Clones straight from Champagne, the founding team imported Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones directly from Champagne, a first for Carneros.
The Vista Terrace, flights pour on a terrace with one of southern Sonoma's great panoramas, above caves aging 500-plus gold medal wines.
