About Gros Ventre Cellars

Gros Ventre Cellars is a small, family-owned winery run by husband-and-wife team Sarah and Chris Pittenger out of Healdsburg. The name, French for big belly, traces back to the Gros Ventre River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the two met in 2003; they later borrowed the nickname they'd given Sarah's pregnant belly for the brand, which they founded in 2009. Chris makes the wine, and his resume is serious: he learned the craft at the likes of Robert Biale, Torbreck, Williams Selyem and Marcassin, and also heads winemaking at Skinner and Limerick Lane.

Pinot Noir is the specialty, bright, translucent, vineyard-designated bottlings from cool sites on the West Sonoma Coast and in Anderson Valley, including the acclaimed Campbell Ranch. Chris takes a less-is-more approach, with modest stem inclusion and minimal oak, and rounds out the range with eclectic varietals from the granitic soils of El Dorado in the Sierra Foothills. Production stays small, around 2,000 cases, and the wines have become sommelier favorites.

A genuinely boutique operation, Gros Ventre offers tastings by arrangement, best set up directly with the winery.

A husband-and-wife boutique making bright, vineyard-designated West Sonoma Coast Pinot from a serious winemaking pedigree.
