Hawk and Horse Vineyards

Famed attorney David Boies purchased the run-down El Roble Grande Ranch in Lower Lake in 1982, a 900-acre former Arabian horse breeding facility known in the 1960s and 70s, dreaming of a self-sustaining retreat where his extended family could gather and world-class Cabernet Sauvignon could grow. His stepdaughter Tracey Hawkins and her husband Mitch now run the vineyard operation, farming 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot at about 2,200 feet in the red volcanic soils of what later became the Red Hills AVA.

The ranch has been farmed organically and biodynamically from day one, organically farmed since 2004 and biodynamically farmed certified since 2008, with Scottish Highland cattle providing the manure for the estate's own biodynamic preparations and resident red-tailed hawks controlling rodents. The debut 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon won gold in international competition, and every vintage since has earned gold, double-gold, or platinum medals; the tasting room occupies part of the old horse trainer's residence, kept as a tack room filled with antique saddles.
