About Ici/Là-Bas
Ici/La-Bas, French for "here/over there," was one of the many labels created by the late Jim Clendenen, the celebrated founder of Au Bon Climat in Santa Barbara County's Santa Maria Valley. Clendenen used the Ici/La-Bas name for Burgundian-varietal wines - chiefly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay - made from cool-climate sites outside his Central Coast home base, roving from Oregon to Mendocino's Anderson Valley and beyond.
The wines were produced at the Au Bon Climat facility at Bien Nacido Vineyard rather than at a standalone estate, in the restrained, higher-acid, food-friendly Burgundian style that made Clendenen one of California's most influential winemakers. Ici/La-Bas is best understood as a specialty label within his broader family of brands - which also included Clendenen Family Vintners, Il Podere dell'Olivos and Vita Nova - rather than as a winery with its own tasting room.
