About Jaxon Keys Winery & Distillery

Jaxon Keys Winery and Distillery crowns a hilltop on a historic 1,250-acre ranch just north of Hopland, its tasting room set in a lovingly restored 1880 farmhouse built by Scottish immigrant John McGlashen, who bought the land from a Mexican land grantee in 1858 for 4,500 dollars and named it Burnee Hill, House on the Hill. The property stayed in his family for a century before Ken Wilson of Wilson Artisan Wineries established Jaxon Keys in 2009.

The estate grows a broad sweep of varieties, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Primitivo among them, poured at an antique bar alongside blends like the Burnee Hill Meritage and Farmhouse Red. The distillery is the showstopper: Alambic brandies made on a copper pot still of 15th-century design, built in Cognac, France in the 1800s.

The wraparound veranda with its cushy wicker seating and long views over the Russian River valley is one of Mendocino's great porches, quiet even on busy days. The winery is dog friendly, offers picnic supplies, and welcomes parties of six or fewer without reservations; note the hilltop tasting room is reached by a good number of steps.
