About JCR Vineyard & Winery

JCR Vineyard grows in one of Santa Barbara County's most hidden corners: a bucolic canyon off Jalama Road southwest of the Sta. Rita Hills, on a family ranch whose diatomaceous-earth hillside was once permitted as a quarry. Founder Jim Siemens planted the vines there in 2008 with the guidance of famed vineyard manager Jeff Newton and neighboring grower Mark Cargasacchi.

Cool, ocean-brushed and rugged, the site yields small lots of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with real tension and minerality. Chad Melville handled the earliest vintages before handing the cellar to Alison Thomson, his former assistant, who makes the wines in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto.

Visitors taste by appointment at the reclaimed-wood tasting room in the Wine Ghetto on Chestnut Court, and the ranch itself, on Jalama Road, hosts visits by appointment only for those who want to see the hidden canyon firsthand.
