About Kalyra Winery

Kalyra is the creation of Australian-born winemaker and surfer Mike Brown, who founded the label in 1989 and named it for an Aboriginal phrase meaning a wild and pleasant place. The style matches: fun, international and unpretentious, blending Santa Barbara County fruit with Australian winemaking flair across whites, reds, rose, sparkling and a famously deep bench of dessert wines, with Aboriginal-art-inspired labels on the bottles.

Kalyra earned lasting fame when its original hilltop tasting room in Santa Ynez appeared in the movie Sideways, in the scene where Jack and Miles first meet Stephanie. The winery has since moved its tasting room to Industrial Way in Buellton, joining the cluster of producers pouring in that walkable warehouse district.

The atmosphere remains laid-back: a dessert-wine flight is always on the list for those with a sweet tooth, leashed dogs are welcome, and reservations are needed only for groups of six or more. Hours center on Friday through Monday afternoons, so check the schedule before midweek visits.

An Australian surfer-winemaker's fun, Sideways-famous label, now pouring its worldly lineup on Buellton's Industrial Way.
