About Kramer Vineyards
Kramer Vineyards started as a hobby. Trudy and Keith Kramer made their first amateur wine in 1971, and by 1983 they had bought a sixty-acre property outside Gaston, planting their first Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling the following year - about two thousand vines. Pinot Gris and Muller-Thurgau followed in 1986, the first commercial vintage came in 1988, and the tasting room opened in 1990.
For years it was a second job. Keith worked as a pharmacist while Trudy built the business, and the couple raised their children on the vineyard. Keith is retired now and spends his time on the tractor and in the cellar; Trudy is president and chief executive.
The second generation has taken over the winemaking. Kim Kramer, the eldest daughter, had no intention of joining the family business until sparkling wine and Pinot Noir caught her while she was working at another Oregon winery in her mid-twenties; she joined the team in 2008. Her sister Rebecca came in as winery director in 2017, making this a family and women-owned estate.
The vineyard has grown to around twenty-two planted acres and the winery makes roughly three thousand cases a year, with a reputation built substantially on traditional-method sparkling wine aged on the property. Alongside it sit estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Muller-Thurgau, Riesling and a handful of less common varieties. The hilltop site has a deck and covered patio looking over a wooded ravine, with a food menu drawn from local producers.
