About Kunde Family Winery
German immigrant Louis Kunde acquired the Wildwood Vineyards ranch in Sonoma Valley in 1904, land whose vines had first been planted in 1879 by pioneer Captain John Drummond using imported cuttings from Châteaux Margaux and Lafite Rothschild. When Louis died in 1922 his son Arthur "Big Boy" Kunde kept the winery alive through Prohibition, closing only when his own sons were drafted into World War II; Big Boy's sons Bob and Fred rebuilt and expanded through the 1960s and 70s, adding Kinneybrook Ranch in 1976, where the winery stands today.
The estate now spans 1,850 acres of ancient red volcanic soils, climbing from the valley floor to a 1,400-foot tasting deck reached on the signature Mountain Top Tour, with aging caves carved into the volcanic hillside deep enough to host tastings at their farthest reaches. Fourth- and fifth-generation Kundes still farm and run the estate producing around 70,000 cases of 100% estate-grown wine, and the Meritage "202" pays homage to the bonded winery number granted to Louis in the 1900s.
