About Mathis Wine
Mathis Wine is the passion project of Peter Mathis, who spent more than twenty years making wine at Ravenswood before turning his focus to a single obsession: Grenache. Nearly two decades ago he cleared land in the hills above Sonoma Valley, below the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard on the volcanic slopes of the Mayacamas, and planted a tiny 7.5-acre estate, mostly Grenache using cuttings from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, interplanted with Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet. His mantra is simple: I grow it. I make it.
The wines are Southern-French in spirit and estate-grown in fact, and they've earned serious acclaim, his signature Grenache took gold at the international Grenache du Monde competition, the highest medal awarded to an American wine, and his Rose de Grenache earned 98 points and Best in Class at a major 2024 competition. Mathis picks over several weeks, block by block, going strictly by taste to catch each parcel at peak ripeness.
Production is small and personal, and a visit to Mathis Vineyard is a chance to taste one of California's most dedicated Grenache specialists at the source.
