About Modern Craft - Wyandotte
Modern Craft Wine is a Michigan fruit wine company started by Tom, a bio systems engineer turned winemaker, and Melissa, after Tom tasted a homemade fruit wine at a family bonfire and liked it despite not thinking of himself as a wine drinker. The first Modern Craft winery and tasting room opened in Au Gres on Michigan's Sunrise Coast, and the brand later expanded south. The Wyandotte room, at 109 Maple Street in the city's downtown, was the company's first downstate location, a fully renovated space with bright colors, a long custom wooden bar, an indoor lounge area and a sidewalk patio.
The wines are fruit wines rather than grape varietals, made by a proprietary process and built to be sweet and smooth but carried by acidity. The house breaks deliberately with wine convention: it encourages blending its bottles with each other and with other drinks, and it serves wine over ice. A visit is a flight and a bottle purchase rather than a vineyard tour, since the fruit and the production sit up north, not in Wyandotte.
Before planning a trip, check that this particular room is still trading. Modern Craft's own tasting room page now lists only four locations, in Au Gres, Standish, West Branch and Frankenmuth, and Wyandotte is not among them, while the Michigan state tourism listing still shows the 109 Maple Street address. Third party directories still show the room as active, which does not settle it. Please confirm current hours, tasting terms and whether the Wyandotte room is open directly with Modern Craft before you go.
