About Montemar
Montemar's motto is Serious Wines, Serious Fun, and both halves are earned. Steve and Caryn Arrowood started as garagistes in 1991, went bonded in 2009 after Steve's aerospace career, opened their Lompoc Wine Ghetto tasting room in 2013 and built the winery in time for the 2015 harvest. After Steve's passing in 2020, son Kyle, who grew up making wine alongside his dad, took over as winemaker, keeping it a true family operation.
The wines are small-lot Rhone and Burgundy varieties, around 1,200 to 1,400 cases a year averaging under 100 cases per lot, from premium Santa Barbara County vineyards with a Sta. Rita Hills focus, some of the same blocks the family has worked since the 1990s. A deep bench of Pinot Noirs, often eight at a time, makes for one of the Ghetto's most fun tastings.
The fun half lives in the sprawling indoor-outdoor space: thousands of square feet of patio with fire pits, oversized furniture, darts, cornhole, a little beach and a large organic garden, plus artisanal charcuterie and cheeses. Open Friday through Sunday, and a favorite hangout as much as a tasting room.
