About Monticola Meadery
Monticola Meadery is a small West Virginia honey wine producer at 211 Chestnut Street in Ronceverte, in Greenbrier County, run by Jefferson Casto. Casto started making mead as a hobby after his own bees produced more honey than his household could use, spent several years refining recipes, and went commercial with support from the Ronceverte Development Corporation. The name is Latin for Mountaineer, a nod both to West Virginia and to mead's long history.
The house style is dry rather than sweet, which sets it apart from much of the mead sold in the region, and each batch is given five to eight months before it is bottled. An early commercial release was a melomel, a mead fermented with fruit, in this case citrus, which Casto suggested drinking alongside pizza and Italian food. The meads have historically been sold through local retailers in the Greenbrier Valley and beyond, including shops in Lewisburg and Fayetteville, rather than only at the production site.
Plan this one carefully. Ronceverte's own business directory and the West Virginia Explorer winery roundup both list Monticola at 211 Chestnut Street with the phone number 304-992-4324, but neither source confirms a tasting room open to walk in visitors, and no current winery website could be found. Greenbrier County is an easy detour from Lewisburg and the Greenbrier Valley corridor if the meadery is receiving guests. Please confirm that the meadery is operating and open to visitors, along with any hours and tasting terms, before you make the trip.
