About North Valley Vineyards
North Valley is a geography argument as much as a label. The Willamette Valley appellation covers roughly 160 miles, and the winery's position is that the best vineyards sit in the much smaller northern corner of it. Everything they make is sourced, farmed and produced within that area, which they call the North Valley.
James Cahill founded it in 2015 and is the winegrower, with more than twenty-five Oregon harvests behind him. Rather than working a single site, he draws deliberately from all six sub-appellations of the northern valley: the Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, the Eola-Amity Hills, the Yamhill-Carlton District, the Chehalem Mountains and McMinnville. The stated method is spending time with the growers in their vineyards weekly from flowering through harvest, then assembling from a broad palate of sources.
Two estate vineyards anchor the farming: the North Valley Estate in Yamhill-Carlton and Aegrina in the McMinnville AVA. Bought-in fruit includes Thoma Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. Sustainability certification runs to LIVE and Salmon Safe. The range is artisan Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and a dry rose.
The tasting room is in the Dundee Hotel at the west end of town, and the format suits the sourcing: tasting several Pinot Noirs of the same vintage from different nearby vineyards, side by side, is a clear way to see what the soils are doing. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on a leash, provided they stay off the furniture.
