About Oak Farm Vineyards
Oak Farm sits at the end of DeVries Road northwest of Lodi, on a 70-acre property the pioneering DeVries family began farming in the 1860s. The preserved colonial farmhouse, the white-railed fencing and the century-old oaks that give the estate its name still define the grounds, and one of Lodi's oldest white barns stands beside the tasting room.
The Panella family, whose agricultural roots in the region reach back to 1936, purchased Oak Farm in 2004. Dan Panella, a third-generation California farmer, runs the operation with his wife Heather. The pivotal decision came in 2012, when the family replanted the estate's 60 acres of vineyard from scratch, choosing varieties, rootstocks and clones deliberately rather than inheriting whatever had been put in the ground decades earlier. Fourteen grape varieties now grow across the property.
The winemaking lineage is worth knowing. Oak Farm's earliest vintages, from 2011 through 2013, were made across town at Estate Crush under consulting winemaker Chad Joseph, the hand behind Harney Lane's rise. When the family's own winery opened for the 2014 harvest, Joseph came with it as resident winemaker, and the estate has been producing on site since.
Barbera, Albarino, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and a Bordeaux-style Meritage are the wines most associated with the property. Tastings are guided and seated, offered seven days a week by reservation, with patio seating, gardens and estate history tours available alongside. The scale of the grounds, a working farm rather than a manicured showpiece, is the thing most visitors remember.
