About Peake Ranch
Peake Ranch is an all-estate Sta. Rita Hills winery founded in 2012 by John Wagner on a 105-acre parcel once owned by the famed artist Channing Peake, on the pastoral bluffs along Santa Rosa Road. Fifty acres of vines climb a hill through a dizzying mix of aspects and slopes, planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Grenache, joined by two sister sites: the extreme, wind-raked John Sebastiano Vineyard five miles north and the Sierra Madre Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley.
Winemaker Wynne Sargeant, who trained at Melville and blended alongside Paul Lato, inaugurated the new winery and tasting room with the 2019 harvest, and her balanced, site-first wines have quickly placed Peake Ranch among the county's most watched estates. History buffs get a bonus: the property includes the rough-hewn tin-roofed building that was pioneering winemaker Richard Sanford's original tasting room, featured in the film Sideways.
The tasting room is open daily from 11 to 5, with intimate indoor seating and a big patio overlooking the rolling vineyards. Reservations are strongly recommended, walk-ins are served as space allows, picnics and outside food are welcome, kids get their own zone with a reservation, dogs are welcome, and vineyard hikes with wine are offered for the adventurous.
