About Presqu'ile Winery
Presqu'ile, pronounced press-keel, is the Murphy family's hilltop estate in the Santa Maria Valley, founded after the Louisiana family lost a beloved Gulf Coast gathering place named Presqu'ile, Creole for almost an island, to Hurricane Katrina. In 2007 they found its successor: 200 acres of fog-swept hills 16 miles from the Pacific, planted as a mosaic of blocks with 73 sustainably certified acres, rising from 700 to 1,000 feet.
South African winemaker Dieter Cronje has led the cellar from the start, crafting poised, cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah that consistently rank among the region's most elegant. The winery itself, with a 240-foot cave and a tasting room voted among California's most beautiful, looks west over the vines to the ocean.
The hospitality matches the site: estate chef Julie Simon cooks from a one-acre organic garden, tastings pair wine with mezze picnics or full food menus, and experiences range from cave-and-cellar tours to horseback rides across the estate and bocce on the lawn. Reservations are recommended, walk-ins are seated when availability allows, dogs are welcome, and the winery is closed Tuesdays.
