About Red Car Wine Company

Red Car Wine Company is one of the Sonoma Coast's most passionately maritime-focused and geographically ambitious small-production programs. Carroll Kemp and Mark Estrin — who named the label for the Pacific Electric 'Red Car' streetcar network that once connected Los Angeles communities before the auto industry bought and dismantled it — produce Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay exclusively from the extreme western Sonoma Coast, focusing on the Bohemian Corridor, Fort Ross-Seaview, and other Pacific-proximate sites where fog, wind, and thin coastal soils produce wines of distinctive maritime character.

The winemaking philosophy is as geographically principled as the sourcing: minimal intervention, native yeasts, and the conviction that the extreme Sonoma Coast terroir produces wines of such individual character that winemaker interference would only diminish rather than enhance what the vineyards naturally express. Wine Advocate has consistently called Red Car among the most distinctive California small-production programs for the precision and genuine coastal mineral complexity that the wines achieve from sources that most producers would consider too challenging to farm commercially.

The Sebastopol Gravenstein Highway tasting room — weekend walk-ins welcome — provides one of the most direct encounters with what the extreme western Sonoma Coast corridor produces in Syrah and Pinot Noir when approached with the geographic conviction and minimal-intervention philosophy that Carroll Kemp and Mark Estrin have sustained for 25 years.
