Haw River Valley Wine
One of America's newest wine appellations in the Piedmont Triangle between Chapel Hill and Burlington, where producers experiment with Albarino, Vermentino, and Mediterranean varieties.
About Haw River Valley Wine
The Haw River Valley AVA, established in 2015, covers the Piedmont region of north-central North Carolina between Chapel Hill, Burlington, and Pittsboro. This is one of the newest and most experimental wine regions in the Southeast, where a new generation of wine producers is planting Mediterranean and Iberian varieties alongside the more established Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. The Triangle's proximity to three major universities (UNC, Duke, NC State) creates an educated, curious consumer base willing to try unusual wines. Grove Winery and Iron Gate Vineyards are among the most established producers. The combination of college-town food culture, Piedmont farm heritage, and genuinely experimental winemaking makes the Haw River Valley one of the most intellectually interesting wine regions in the American South.
