About Old Mission Peninsula

Old Mission Peninsula is Michigan's most acclaimed wine region and one of the most geographically distinctive in the country. Just 18 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest, the peninsula juts into Grand Traverse Bay, surrounded by water on three sides. This creates an unique microclimate where Lake Michigan's thermal mass prevents temperatures from swinging as extremely as inland areas, extending the growing season and protecting vines from the worst winter cold. The 45th parallel runs through the peninsula, the same latitude as Bordeaux and Burgundy. Riesling is the signature grape, producing wines with crystalline purity and remarkable aromatic intensity. Chateau Grand Traverse, founded in 1974, pioneered the region, and today Brys Estate, 2 Lads, and Black Star Farms are among the most recognized producers. The drive up the peninsula from Traverse City, with cherry orchards, vineyards, and bay views at every turn, is one of the most beautiful wine country drives in America.
