Roanoke Valley Wine

The Roanoke Valley and surrounding Blue Ridge foothills represent Virginia's newest wine frontier. Sitting at 1,000-2,000 feet elevation in the southwestern part of the state, the region benefits from mountain-moderated temperatures, well-drained Blue Ridge soils, and a growing season that allows Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and even some Tannat to achieve genuine quality. Virginia Dare Winery, Roanoke's urban tasting room scene, and a growing cluster of estate producers between Roanoke and Floyd are attracting visitors who have explored the more established Monticello and Northern Virginia wine corridors. The Blue Ridge Parkway, America's most scenic mountain drive, passes directly through the wine region, creating a natural touring corridor that connects vineyard visits with some of the most spectacular scenery on the East Coast.
