About Willcox
Willcox has quietly become the engine of Arizona's wine boom. Situated on the high desert plains of Cochise County at approximately 4,200 feet elevation, the Willcox area now accounts for the largest volume of Arizona wine grapes under cultivation, and the quality of the resulting wines has begun to match the quantity.
The growing conditions here are distinctive: the Sulphur Springs Valley floor sits between the Dos Cabezas and Dragoon Mountain ranges, capturing monsoon moisture while benefiting from the intense solar radiation and wide diurnal temperature variation that altitude brings. The soils are deep, sandy loams with good drainage, ideal for producing concentrated grapes without irrigation stress.
Aridus Wine Company, Carlson Creek, and a cluster of serious producers have established Willcox as the place to watch in Arizona wine. The variety of wine styles emerging from the region reflects genuine experimentation: bold Petite Sirah and Syrah sit alongside elegant Viognier, substantial Tempranillo, and blends that don't fit easy categorization. Several producers operate tasting rooms both at the vineyard and in Scottsdale or Tucson, making it easy to encounter Willcox wines before committing to the drive out.
