About Ridgecrest
Harry Peterson-Nedry bought this land in 1980 and planted the first wine grapes on Ribbon Ridge, against local advice that it was too far west in the valley to work. He was right, and the appellation he helped establish was approved in 2006. He also gave up using the Ribbon Ridge name on his own label so that others in the new AVA could share it, which tells you something about how the place operates.
He went on to found Chehalem Winery in 1990 and spent decades as one of Oregon's more visible advocates, serving on the Oregon Wine Board and involved in Oregon Pinot Camp, the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, the International Pinot Noir Celebration and the Oregon Riesling Alliance. He holds degrees in both chemistry and English, which suits a winemaking approach that is hands-on and scientific at the same time.
In 2018 he sold his stake in Chehalem to come back and make wine solely from the vineyard that started it all. His daughter Wynne Peterson-Nedry is now winemaker and co-proprietor. She was six months old when her parents bought the property, so she has known the site her whole life.
Ribbon Ridge is the smallest sub-AVA in the Willamette Valley, sitting northwest of Dundee between Newberg and Gaston. The estate range is wider than the neighbourhood norm, running to Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, Chenin Blanc and Gamay Noir. Tastings happen in a remodelled farmhouse called the Tasting Cottage, surrounded by vines now over forty years old.
He planted Ribbon Ridge first, then gave up the name on his own label so the rest of the AVA could use it.
