About Rodeo Hills Winery

Jared Etzel grew up inside Oregon wine. His father Mike Etzel founded Beaux Freres, and Jared was four when the family moved onto the former hog ranch that has been its home since 1987. He worked the vineyard and the cellar growing up, took harvest internships at Clos Erasmus and Vina El Pison in Spain, earned a viticulture and enology degree at Oregon State and worked at Kapcsandy and Fisher in California.

In 2012 he co-founded Domaine Roy et Fils with Marc-Andre Roy. The wines drew critical attention and the winery was sold to Marchesi Frescobaldi in 2023, by which point Etzel had already bought this property, in 2016, and started planting.

The name comes from childhood. His father used to drive the family over Worden Hill Road, then still gravel, fast enough that the car bucked. The children called it Rodeo Hill. Thirty-five years later he was planting a vineyard on the same road and the name was waiting for him.

It is a family project with his wife Erica and brother-in-law Eugene Labunsky, and it is small: around seven acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones. There is no winery on site; Etzel makes the wine at nearby Late Sky, where he is a partner. The tasting room opened in 2022 and reads more like a modern house than a commercial room. Alongside tastings there is a Long Lunch, a multi-course locally sourced menu paired with the wines, which is a rarity in the valley.

A Beaux Freres childhood, a seven-acre vineyard, and a name from the back of a bouncing VW.

Deep Oregon lineage,Jared Etzel is the son of Beaux Freres founding winemaker Mike Etzel and grew up on the property.
A track record before this,he co-founded Domaine Roy et Fils in 2012 and sold it to Marchesi Frescobaldi in 2023.
Seriously small, around seven acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, planted from 2016.
Lunch, not just a flight, the Long Lunch pairs a multi-course locally sourced menu with the wines, which almost nowhere else here offers.
The best name story on the list,Worden Hill Road was gravel when his father drove the family over it, and the kids called it Rodeo Hill.
"Small, personal and very well made, from someone who has done this at scale before."
