Sand-Reckoner Vineyards (Tasting Room Closed)

Sand-Reckoner Vineyards is closed. Owners Sarah Fox and Rob Hammelman shut the winery down after fifteen years, closing their Tucson tasting room at 510 N. Seventh Avenue in August 2024 and then winding up the winery itself with a liquidation sale on December 21, 2024. In their closing note they described the run as fifteen years that were wonderfully full, full of hard winery work, long days, sweat and tears. It was one of the better regarded names in southern Arizona wine for most of that time.

The estate vineyard and winery were at 4798 E. Robbs Road in Willcox, out on the Cochise County high desert at elevation, the area that supplies most of Arizona's serious wine grapes. The Tucson tasting room, opened to bring those wines to the city, marked its third anniversary in February 2020 before closing four years later. The final liquidation sale ran out of 810 E. 17th Street in Tucson and cut every remaining bottle by at least half, mostly library wines, with no shipping and no new orders taken.

Neither the Willcox property nor the Tucson room is open to the public under this name. Willcox itself remains the centre of Arizona wine, with a number of other tasting rooms in town and out along the county roads, and the Willcox AVA continues to supply fruit to producers across the state. Confirm current details directly with any Arizona winery before you drive out, since the scene there changes fast.
