About Scharffenberger Cellars

Scharffenberger Cellars has been pioneering premium Mendocino sparkling wine since 1981, when John Scharffenberger founded the house in the heart of Anderson Valley, close enough to the Pacific that coastal fog and deep valley soils shape every vintage. Today the winery belongs to the family of Champagne's Louis Roederer, and its farmhouse tasting room sits among sister properties Roederer Estate and Domaine Anderson along Highway 128 in Philo.

Every bottle is individually fermented in the time-honored methode traditionnelle, and a solera reserve program layers older wines into each release for complexity and house consistency. Winemaker Jeffrey Jindra, only the third in the winery's history, took over in 2018 and has kept the style true to the founding philosophy, working from the 120-acre estate, which is sustainably farmed and Fish Friendly Farming certified; the winery granted 63 of its acres to the Anderson Valley Land Trust back in 1992.

The refreshed tasting room pours flights and wine by the glass beside a garden built for lingering: covered porch tables, lawn games like cornhole, picnic space and rotating local art on the walls. Local food trucks appear regularly, kids get juice and crayons at their own small table, and famously, the sparkling wines pair with Scharffen Berger chocolate, the second act of the winery's founder.
