About Schug Carneros Estate Winery
Schug Carneros Estate Winery is one of the most historically significant and personally distinctive wine estates in the Carneros AVA. Walter Schug — born in Germany's Rheingau region and trained in the old-world winemaking traditions of one of Germany's most celebrated wine families — came to California in 1961 and spent two decades as the founding winemaker at Joseph Phelps Vineyards, where he created Insignia, California's first Meritage wine.
In 1980, Walter established his own Carneros estate with a philosophy shaped entirely by his German-Burgundian heritage: elegant, food-first wines that express the coolness and restraint of the Carneros terroir rather than the ripeness and power that California winemaking was then celebrating. The result — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of genuine European sensibility from the bay-influenced hills south of Sonoma — found an audience that has sustained the family estate through four decades.
Now led by Walter's children, Schug produces Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay alongside Sonoma Coast expressions, with a culinary program featuring Chef Kristine's seasonal food pairings that celebrate the old-world conviction that wine exists to accompany food. The cave tour and tasting experience — walking through the production caves before settling into the scenic Carneros courtyard — is one of the most complete and historically resonant winery visits in the AVA.
